 As the legendary agent of the Empress, he has uncovered the closest held secrets, stopped or started wars, freed impossibly guarded prisoners, and even stolen the most treasured object of the fairie.

In reality, he is Melik, a willful, unpredictable thief-mage trying to take an unauthorized vacation. Along with his black cat familiar, Midnight, he is recruited to join a quest headed by an Elven Prince to recover an ancient relic with the power to control dragons. 

Melik and Midnight are once more on the road with Prince Sylmore, leaving the dwarven city of Brundag behind. Their destination is the elven nation of Ure` Sheaf, whose Queen wants nothing more than to put "Nightcat" into the deepest, darkest dungeon and toss away the key. 

Unfortunately for the party, an ambush throws everything into disarray and threatens to end the quest even before they reach the elven lands. Melik will have to risk his life and very soul to put things back on track.

Melik and Midnight avoid capture by the elves, only to find their path to escape is through a magical gateway into the wilderness. A desolate land where the elven traitor hides, building an army of dark elves, giants, and even dragons to overthrow the elf queen. 

To stop this civil war, Melik will need his allies to cooperate and the elven prince to trust him, two tasks that may well be beyond even his famous wit and charm.
